About Us

STAND (Students Taking Action Not Drugs), a division of the Drug Free America Foundation, was originally founded in August of 1999 under the name International Students in Action (ISIA) by Kevin Sabet and Sue Rusche. ISIA was created to educate an international network of university students about the dangers of addictive drugs and to mobilize them to reduce drug substance abuse on their campuses. With many ISIA founders moving on out of college, students interested in educating their peers approached ISIA members and, with the guidance and sponsorship of the Drug Free America Foundation (DFAF), formed STAND. STAND utilizes revitalized the ISIA mission by creating a unique, professionally-designed public relations campaign and website to address college and university student concerns about the drug and alcohol problem on at college campuses. STAND is a project funded by the National Institutes of Health.

Our Goals are:

  • To use science-based principles in educating college students about the dangers of drugs; and in turn, reduce drug use among 18-25 year olds; and,
  • To direct young people into treatment through action on behalf of their loved ones.

STAND will accomplish this by utilizing the Internet with it's web site, www.studentstakingaction.org. Currently, the site is being designed to:

  • Disseminate the latest scientific evidence about the dangers of drugs and alcohol; and,
  • House SAMHSA's drug abuse treatment data base in order to lead people to treatment; and,
  • Publish articles and statements about the capacity of addictive drugs to change the brain, change behavior, and produce addiction
